Early Morning Earthquake on Hawaii Island

HILO, Hawaii (KHNL) - A 3.8 magnitude earthquake was reported just before 5:30 Thursday morning 24 miles south of Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

No tsunami watch or warning was issued and no injuries were reported.

The quake occured near the site of Kalapana, a town which was destroyed by lava flows during a November 1986 eruption of the Kilauea volcano.

The coordinates of the quake were 19.356°N, 155.077°W. The USGS reports the quake occured at a depth of 6.2 miles.

So far, there have been no aftershocks.
