WAIKIKI (KHNL) - Got an old pair of sneakers you're ready to throw into the trash? Instead of tossing them, you can actually help turn them into something useful.
The City and County of Honolulu and Nike are working together to keep old shoes out of landfills. Last year, they collected more than six thousand pairs. This year's goal is 20-thousand.
Robert Balagtas, a Re-Use a Shoe spokesperson said "they're broken down and made into courts and play surfaces for use around the nation."
"We live in a contained environment, we're an island," said city official Gail Haraguchi. "We need to recycle. It's an effort to make sure we don't fill our landfills and process what we can through this means."
