Six Hurt in Ala Moana Building Fire

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Six people have been injured, two seriously in a three-alarm building fire that broke out on the 25th floor of a highrise on Makaloa Street just before 9AM Tuesday morning. The fire happened at Kapiolani Manor on the corner of Makaloa street and Kalauokalani way.

Medical crews have transported a 96-year-old female and a 78-year-old female to Straub hospital. Both are listed in serious condition. The 96-year-old woman was lying in a hallway when help arrived. The 78-year-old was trying to help by holding a door open for firefighters. Both of these women are suffering from smoke inhalation injuries.

A 43-year-old female was waving from a balcony. She was taken to Kuakini Medical Center in stable condition. A male maintenance worker was treated at the scene and released.

Another female who lived on the 7th floor evacuated without taking her asthma medication and had to be treated at the scene for an asthma attack. A 91-year-old female was also injured, but her status is unknown.

The fire broke out in unit 2509 of the building. The two women in serious condition were both overcome by smoke as they tried to escape the blaze. Other residents, some of whom were asleep heard fire alarms and were able to evacuate the buiding without problems. 

The fire was first reported at 8:49 AM. Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes. The fire was deemed to be under control at 9:19 AM.

The unit was completely destroyed. Two men, who apparently live at the unit were not home at the time. There is no estimate yet of the damage.

Kapiolani manor is a 414-unit 25-story condominium located at 1655 Makaloa street. The building does not have a sprinkler system.
