Buddha's Birthday Celebrated by Certain Buddhists

KAPIOLANI PARK (KHNL) - Easter wasn't the only celebration that took place on the island today. Some Buddhists also celebrated the birth of their religion's founder in a Buddha Day celebration at Kapiolani Park.

Local Buddhists from Japanese Buddhist temples gathered at Kapiolani Bandstand for the the Hanamatsuri festival. Attendees got to enjoy a puppet show on the birth of Buddha by Pacific Buddhist Academy students, traditional Buddhist displays, a bon dance, and a concert put on by the Little Buddhas.

Hawaii's Japanese sects traditionally celebrate the birth of the Shakyamuni Buddha in April. Other branches of Buddhism celebrate the tradition in May.

Bishop Thomas Okano of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii was the keynote speaker. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission choir and students of Pacific Buddhist Academy provided music.
