Explosion at HECO Substation Causes Power Outage On Oahu

(KHNL) - Honolulu firefighters were called to HECO headquarters Wednesday evening around 5 PM.  HECO officials say there was work going on at the Archer substation on Ward Avenue.

Crews were doing something called "switching" - which involves transferring customers from one circuit to another.

Something went wrong and caused a power outage. It affected primarily the Ward/Piikoi area; also parts of Ala Moana area.

About 5,000 customers were affected.

Honolulu fire officials said it appeared two people were hurt after an explosion; one person had battery acid burns and another had head injuries.
