HONOLULU (KHNL) - The state health department Tuesday announced new emergency rules aimed at helping get more food onto the plates of Hawaii's homeless population. Effective immediately the state is offering an exemption from permits needed to prepare and serve food that will be provided at no cost to those who are homeless.

State health director Chiyome Fukino says there simply are too many people in our state who have no place to sleep, no kitchen to cook in and no money to buy food with.

"This is a return to a time that maybe was forgotten or lost in America, when brothers and sisters reach out to those in need without fear" said Fukino.

The Department of Health will be holding public hearings in the coming weeks as part of the process to make the temporary rules permanent. The agency will also provide food preparation and safety training to groups looking to assist the homeless.
