KAHANA BEACH, WEST MAUI (KHNL) - Instead of a fun filled afternoon, a catamaran capsizes off the coast of Maui, turning into a fatal trip for one person and stranding 55 others at sea. The accident happened shortly after 5 o clock, just off Kahana beach on West Maui.

6 crew members and 49 passengers were on board. The Maui County spokesperson says the boat, named the Ki'ele 5, operated by Hyatt Hotel, apparently encountered strong winds when the boat's mast snapped off. Fire rescuers and the coast guard responded to the scene.

The Maui County spokesperson confirms one of the passengers, a 48-year old man was killed, and at least 2 others (possibly hospitalized for hypothermia) were transported to Maui Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Dr. Rick Sword was working in the emergency room at the time. "I think there's a lot of walking wounded. I think the mast might have snapped off. I just know there's a lot of wet people pouring in to the ER here."
