Authorities Launch Initiative Against Child Porn

By Kristine Uyeno

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Local authorities launch a new campaign to crack down on child pornography and sex crimes.

"Project Safe Childhood" is designed to protect kids by investigating and prosecuting sex offenders who possess child porn, sexual offenders who don't register in Hawaii and sex predators online.

"I want every sexual predator to be thinking of us first before they even think of having sexual contact with our children," said Ed Kubo, U.S. Attorney.

"The only way that we are going to make a serious dent in child pornography is to vigorously go after those who will possess or purchase it," said Mark Bennett, state attorney general.

Authorities also announced federal charges against 10 men for possessing child porn.

As part of the new campaign, authorities will also investigate and prosecute sexual predators online. Since 2003, the number of internet crimes involving kids and teens has tripled.

"And whoever sends, receives, transmits or possesses chid porn is committing a federal offense as well as a state offense and they will be punished," said Kubo.

The initiative is also about educating teens, warning them not to disclose too much personal information on the internet. And advises parents how to protect their kids.
