PEARL HARBOR (KHNL) - The Attorney General's Cold Case Unit solved a 15-year-old murder case on Oahu. 19-year-old Ruben Gallegos was last seen on May 1, 1992 leaving his cashier cage at the Pearl Harbor Navy Exchange carrying a money bag with $80,000. He was with Jenaro Torres, a base police officer, who was later arrested.
In Torres' car were some items belonging to Gallegos, the missing money and a handgun but this case went cold until December of 2005.
That's when the recently formed Cold Case Unit uncovered witness testimony that helped convict Torres of murder.
"We are so grateful we finally got justice, we thought this day would never come. This is part of our closure, now our dream is to bring Ruben home and put him to rest then my family will have closure," said Gallegos' sister, Blanca Gallegos-Lermal.
Torres is facing life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder. But he could also receive additional sentences at his next court date in May.
