Honolulu City And County Truck Kills Nanakuli Man

By Beth Hillyer

(KHNL) - Rainy conditions may have been a factor in a fatal crash Friday night involving a City and County of Honolulu utility truck.

The head-on crash blocked the town-bound lanes for hours as police officers investigated the crash.

A heavy rainstorm passed through the area and early reports indicate the driver of the utility truck may have been trying to stop at this intersection on Farrington Highway.

A Nanakuli man died in the crash, his sister and nephew seriously injured.

38 year-old Keawi Kekahuna died at the scene. And his family says he was a big man with an even bigger heart.

Not flowers. Not balloons. The Kekahuna family brings a more precious gift to the 9 year-old boy injured in the crash.

Baseballs signed by fellow little leaguers. Today was opening day for those in the Waianae Coast Youth Baseball League.

Keanu should have been at the ball park today but instead he's at the Queens Medical Center recovering form surgery to remove his badly damaged spleen.

His mom, Danalyn Duseigneur is in another room following surgery to repair her broken hip.

Family members pray they'll heal.

Her daughter Whitney hopes, "That they come out good. That they can walk."

But one family member didn't survive the crash. Keawi Kekahuna died on impact.

His mom Lynette Kekahuna describes her son, "He's very open, very humble, fun to be with. His sense of humor is not like how we joke around his would come out whoop."

All they have left are photos and memories to last a lifetime. His mom concludes, "We are going to miss him a lot "

Now is not the time to mourn, they have a box of baseballs to deliver.
