Accused Sheriff Killer Sentenced on Drug Counts

HONOLULU (KHNL) - An Oahu man charged with fatally shooting a deputy sheriff is sentenced to 30 years in prison for an unrelated drug case.

With his family there to support him, John Lorenzo appeared in court for the hearing Thursday morning. The 32-year-old pleaded no contest to three drug offenses and a DUI charge last July.

While awaiting sentencing, prosecutors say Lorenzo stormed into the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge after closing on February 10th, and held the place up at gunpoint. They say he shot and killed deputy sheriff Daniel Browne-Sanchez, who worked at the bar part-time.

Prosecutors asked the judge to double Lorenzo's punishment on the drug counts. The judge approved that request, handing down the 30-year term.
