(KHNL) - A hit and run crash on Makaha left a pedestrian dead Monday night. Witnesses told police that the victim was not in a marked crosswalk.

Officers say the driver of a Honda slammed into him.

The crash happened on Farrington Highway in front of the Makaha Surfside apartments.

Police say just before 7:00 pm, the 63-year-old victim was crossing the highway after getting off a city bus.

Emergency responders say the victim was already dead by the time they arrived.

Officers say witnesses reported seeing the man step off a city bus heading west-bound.

These same witnesses also said the victim was not in a marked crosswalk.

"He walked toward the driveway of the Makaha Surfside," said Sgt. Lorenzo Ridela. "As he crossed the street a blue Honda struck him and continued on without stopping."

Officers closed Farrington Highway in the east-bound direction while investigating at the scene.

They're still searching for the driver of the Honda.

Call Honolulu Police if you can help the department with this hit and run case.

This is the ninth pedestrian fatality so far this year.
