HONOLULU (KHNL) - Simba, a beautiful golden retriever service dog, has reported to work at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, visiting with patients, encouraging activity on the part of the mobility challenged and enhancing morale among hospital personnel and visitors.
Trained to make life more bearable for the patients hospitalized due to brain injury, strokes, joint replacement surgery, amputation and other rehabilitative needs, Simba arrives for duty with his parents, REHAB Hospital physical therapist Michael Ebesu and occupational therapist Dawn Ebesu. He lives with them in Hawaii Kai and is their first "child."
Prior to his arrival, hospital employees held a ³doggie shower² to welcome the new staff member, contributing a variety of pet gifts. Since his arrival, he has been happily welcomed to the REHAB team and has already ³networked² with other service dogs owned by individual patients, many of whom are in wheelchairs and are assisted with tasks in their daily life by the animals.
