HONOLULU (KHNL) - A man accused in a road rage incident that left a married couple seriously injured appeared in court Friday. Forty-five-year-old Gerald Paakaula is charged with assault.

Investigators say the victims were pulling into a parking stall in Waikele, when their car bumped into the suspect's car. They say occupants of both vehicles started arguing.

According to a police affidavit, "Paakaula intervened and punched (the female victim) in the face, picked her up off her feet and slammed her onto the asphalt."

The court papers say her husband "was punched in the throat by G. Paakaula." He "fell to the ground gasping for air." According to the affidavit, "While on the ground, he was kicked in the head/facial area by (the suspect's son)."

The judge postponed Paakaula's preliminary hearing until March 16th.
