Elderly Man Hit By Car Dies From His Injuries

LILIHA (KHNL) -- The number of pedestrian deaths on Oahu continues to climb. A man hit by a car two-and-a-half weeks ago dies from his injuries, raising the number of fatalities this year to seven.

The crash happened at the intersection of Liliha Access Road and Liliha Street January 19th. Investigators say 90-year-old William Shimabuku was walking in a crosswalk, when a car making a left turn plowed into him. The victim went to the Queen's Medical Center and was later released.

Last Thursday, a family member went to Shimabuku's apartment on Liliha Street and found him unresponsive. The Medical Examiner says he died from head injuries caused by the collision. On Monday, police opened a negligent homicide investigation.

Seven of the 10 traffic deaths on Oahu this year have involved pedestrians.
