Hike for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Raises Thousands of Dollars

By Dan Dennison

LANIKAI (KHNL) - It's called the hike for discovery. This group of hikers is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America. They've each had to collect at least three thousand dollars in donations. Next weekend the Oahu team joins teams from the mainland on a series of hikes on Maui.

A spokesperson from the Society, Alicia Aragon, says, "It's incredibly important, because the money they raise on this team will support 5 local patients. Actually the money they raise will support 6 families for a year, doctors and support for the patients."

Cancers of the blood and lymph system impact thousands of people each year, and leukemia is one of the major cancers that strikes kids. Most of these hikers have a loved one or friend who's suffered from lymphoma or leukemia. This is the first year for the Hawaii hike for discovery. Plans for the second series of hikes on Kauai are already underway.
