HONOLULU (KHNL) - Oahu labor union members spent Wednesday packing survival kits for homeless families across Hawaii.

They met at the Aloha United Way office on Vineyard Boulevard and stocked kits with socks, deodorant and other items that many people take for granted.  Wayne Cahill, one of the volunteers says, "Our members of our unions will give back to the community.  In this case, with this backpack project they donated a lot of the supplies which go into it."

Of the 1700 backpack survival kits, 900 will be distributed to the homeless on Oahu with the remainder being shipped to Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai.
