PEARL HARBOR (KHNL) - When the call went out for all hands on deck, dozens of students, staff and faculty from Chaminade University responded in a mighty big way.
The group of eager volunteers are kicking off their 50,000 hours of community service campaign, by scrubbing the decks of the Mighty Mo. This maintenance assignment on board the storied ship includes sanding, scraping and painting of the battleship.
While you might not want to spend your Saturday cleaning up, these students take part because it is part of their school s curriculum.
"Service at Chaminade is part of the education wew want the students to leave with... we do many things" said faculty member Thomas Spring.
"its a perfect day to clean, its still interesting to be around all this historical memorabilia and you learn so much, even though you are cleaning. Its pretty cool" said student Chandra Legdesog.
Chaminade s 50,000 hours of community service program continues this spring with a campus clean-up, that will also get alumni involved in helping out the community.
