(KHNL) - Kahuku Hospital is getting ready to shut down in just a few weeks. And an Oahu mother is expressing concern after her son was injured in an accident Thanksgiving night on the North Shore.
"It's the call that you have nightmares about all through your life, from the time you first have a child," said Julia Price.
Her 21-year-old son, Brent, had been involved in a single-car accident on Kamehameha Highway. He was less than a mile from home and just minutes away from Kahuku Hospital.
"The main problem was that he ruptured his spleen and he was bleeding out in the field," she said.
She says her son was taken to Queen's Medical Center because the roads were clear at the time. Price says it was the right thing to do.
Brent has been in a coma for nearly two weeks but his mother says his condition is improving.
But she worries what will happen in the near future when Kahuku Hospital closes.
"This isn't a business issue, it's not an issue about jobs, none of that is as important as community health," said Price.
She says the hospital needs to remain open and be supported with better medical equipment.
'If there's going to be something that happens and there always is something that happens, there needs to be a medical facility that is able to look after these people," she said.
Kahuku Hospital plans to shut down at the end of this month.
