Big Island Police Release Names of Crash Victims

VOLCANO, HAWAII (KHNL) - Five people were killed and another was flown to an O'ahu hospital in critical condition following a head-on collision less than a mile from the main entrance of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Three people in a sport utility vehicle and two in a sedan died in the crash at 10 p.m. Friday near the park's Hilo boundary, according to park authorities. A third vehicle, traveling behind the sedan, also crashed.

The people in the Porsche SUV headed towards Ka'u were 55 year old Samuel Henry Furtado, 46 year old Loretta Kae Rafferty, and 60 year old Lucia Clearwater, all from Volcano. All were killed.

The people in the sedan headed towards Hilo were 32 year old Candice Chisholm and 33 year old Owen Romanie, from British Columbia, Canada. Both were killed.

The 37-year-old driver of the third vehicle, Antony Gross, suffered extensive leg injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, and then flown to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu for surgery. Dan Fisher, his passenger, refused treatment at the scene.
