(KHNL) -- An Oahu man, accused of triggering a Hazmat response during his quest for copper, makes his first court appearance Thursday.

Alden Kaupiko is charged with trespassing, theft, and using burglary tools.

Officers arrested the suspected copper thief last Friday. Witnesses believe the 47-year-old was stealing copper wire from utility poles near the Koko Head Trail.

At one point, police say he knocked down a pole, breaking open a transformer, and exposed himself and five responding officers to possible chemical contamination. A Hazmat crew rushed in to decontaminate the suspect and the officers.

Prosecutors say they're not pursuing more serious charges against Kaupiko because they couldn't determine who the old utility poles belong to.

A preliminary hearing is set for Monday.
