KAENA POINT, Oahu (KHNL) - State land officials made a gruesome discovery Wednesday morning. Wild dogs killed a colony of shearwater terns at Kaena Point Sunday night.

State wildlife officials got a tip saying several dogs were seen running loose in the area. Shortly thereafter, they discovered the dead young birds throughout the reserve.

The flightless chicks had been nesting in their burrows when the dogs attacked them. They were expected to make their first journey to sea this week.

Dogs are strictly prohibited at Kaena point. Still, about 40% of the chick population is lost to animal attacks every year.
