KALIHI (KHNL) - The number of traffic fatalities on Oahu continues to climb. An elderly man is dead after a truck plows into him in Kalihi.
Timing is everything. Witnesses told police the victim was walking behind the truck as it started backing out of a driveway.
It all happened on Dillingham Boulevard near Mokauea Street at about 11:30 Friday morning.
Police say a white truck backed out of the parking lot of a recycling business onto the main roadway, and was starting to move forward. That's when people in the area waved at the driver to stop.
The 62-year-old man behind the wheel told investigators he didn't realize his truck had hit anyone.
"I heard people yelling and I heard them honking the horns," Kelley McKim, witness, said. "And then we came and looked, and there was this guy on the ground. He had blood all over his arms. He looked like an old guy."
