Man Accused of Setting Girlfriend on Fire

By Minna Sugimoto

(KHNL) -- What began as a house fire is now an attempted murder investigation. A Leeward Oahu man is in police custody, accused of trying to kill his girlfriend.

Monday night, officers arrested 50-year-old Kim Massey on suspicion of attempted murder and arson. Investigators say he and his 51-year-old girlfriend were arguing over money inside a house on Waiomea Street in Honokai Hale last Thursday. Massey is accused of pouring gasoline on the woman and then setting her on fire.

"The way that it was described to me, severe burns to her chest and her face area," Capt. Frank Fujii, Honolulu Police Department, said. "She's in stable condition right now. And as you know, anytime somebody is burned that severely, there's always possibility of infection."

The suspect has prior convictions for assault and violating a protective order. Police say they're pursuing immediate charges.
