Dangerous Intersections Put Many At Risk

(KHNL) - Every time high school senior Giles Forsythe enters this crosswalk he takes a risk.

He explained, "Every day as we're waiting, there's always a few last minute dodgers who come speeding through the red light."

Speeding is just one factor that makes this intersection on Farrington Highway in Waianae one of the most dangerous in the state.

But speeding isn't the only problem here.

Drivers often ignore traffic signals.

"I see that they wildly disobey the yellow, they zip by. There have been accidents," said Forsythe.

Here's a look at the seven most dangerous intersections in Hawaii.

Six of them are on Oahu, one in Hilo.

"The pedestrian signal started flashing red, even before I got to the halfway point. It's one of the issues here at Ala Moana and Hobron. There's not enough time to cross the street."

Jenny Medeiros and her family couldn't make it to the other side in time.

They got stuck in the middle.

She explained, "We decided to stop because we didn't want to take a chance with the kids."

Another big issue-- cars stopping in the crosswalk.

Medeiros knows the dangers here.

But she hopes changes are made to make it safer for others.

Medeiros said, "It should be a little longer so people have time to cross so there are no accidents. Some people don't listen to the stop light, just walk and they get hit."
