HONOLULU (KHNL) -- There were lei and smiles at the Honolulu Police Department's headquarters Wednesday.
The department presented awards to nine officers and five civilians during a ceremony.
Six of the officers were hailed for helping to evacuate residents from a burning building in Waikiki. Officer David Politsch was among them. He received the Warrior Bronze Medal of Valor, which is the department's third-highest honor.
"It's an honor. It's, you know, an honor," Politsch said. "I mean, it's something any officer who have did, and it's good to get recognized."
"How long ago did you become an officer, and why did you join this line of work?" this reporter asked.
"Eight years ago, to protect and serve," he replied, laughing.
