Sweet Home Alabama

I had the pleasure to spend five days in Alabama this past week, and if you think we have the patent or monopoly on "aloha spirit", let me assure you, it's alive and well in the form of down- home southern hospitality in Alabama...

Like when we were asked to tailgate with people we had never met before, people who fed us and laughed with us before and after the game; like when the local sheriff stopped directing traffic and got into his car to help lead us to our tailgating destination on the congested Tuscaloosa campus; like when four or five different Alabama fans saw my University of Hawaii logoed-shirt and went out of their way to thank me for coming to their state as they also hoped I was enjoying my stay- and this was before the football game when the outcome was obviously still in doubt!  Almost 100,000 people, no alcohol in the stadium, and a wonderful, collegiate atmosphere for sure.

I wonder if we treat our bright-eyed visitors this well when we see them here.  I wonder if we talk about friendliness and caring more than we sometimes show it.  Something to ponder, but I do know that there really is deep meaning and reality to that storied Lynyrd Skynyrd phrase, "sweet home, Alabama". Think about it...
