WAIPAHU (KHNL) -- The sound of gunfire shocks a Waipahu neighborhood. A woman wielding two knives is shot at by Honolulu police.

The bullet missed the 43-year-old woman who, witnesses say, was armed with two meat cleavers. She's being held at the Pearl City police station.

The shooting happened on Kahuamoku Street in Waipahu at about 1:30 Thursday afternoon. It all started when police received a call that a person was armed outside an apartment building.

Officers say they found a woman with two knives threatening a person in the area. Police say an officer opened fire when the woman turned towards officers.

Neighbors say the suspect is a wife and mother of three. They're stunned by the incident.

"I really don't know what happened 'cause she's a very quiet lady," Norma Carino, suspect's neighbor, said. "She don't bother nobody. So I don't know what really happened."

Officers arrested the woman for investigation of terroristic threatening. Her husband was told what happened when he arrived home.

The officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
