Drive Jive

With a pair of tragic accidents at the same North Shore spot this past weekend, many amateur experts have come forward to voice their corrective suggestions- more punitive measures for kids driving outside of the new laws, make the roads safer, have more police patrols.

All nice thoughts, but a basic reality is that too many people treat driving too casually.  Young people often think they are immune to the laws of nature, physics, and the rules of the road. Much like kids who ignore advice about harmful drugs and illegal alcohol use, much like many youngsters who ignore basic warnings about safe sex, it is unfortunately a truism that people don't think about consequences in the spur of the moment during their youthful transgressions; the "it-won't-happen-to-me" syndrome...

Unfortunately, time and time again, lessons are not learned until it is too late, and families and communities suffer.  Parents can help by making sure they enforce rules and recite laws, and then perhaps some of these senseless tragedies can be avoided.  Kids need to grow up real fast when lives and futures are at stake.  This has been a reality for a long time.  Think about it...
