Power Poles Snap, Shutting Down Kalihi Kai

by Minna Sugimoto

KALIHI (KHNL) -- The lights went out for about 1,600 Hawaiian Electric customers after a couple of power poles in Kalihi snapped.

It happened near the intersection of Sand Island Access Road and Auiki Street shortly after 9 a.m. The top portion of two poles snapped, sending chunks of wood to the street below.

People who work in the area watched as Hawaiian Electric crews began the repair work. HECO says it believes some type of vehicle either struck the poles or snagged the lines.

At 3:30 p.m., only one customer was still without power.
