WAIMANALO, Oahu (KHNL) - Drivers heading around Makapuu toward Waimanalo should expect delays for about a month. The state says it needs to repair Kalanianaole Highway near the reaearch pier before it drops off into the ocean.
The state Department of Transportation says erosion along the ocean side of the road needs to be addressed. Last year, the state moved the road about 20 feet back toward the mountains. Now, state engineers want to drive concrete pilings into the ground to reinforce the roadway.
"I know the work s going to be inconvenient for the next three or four weeks, but this is something we feel we need to do to protect what's left of the road. We want to ensure there is two ways in and out of Waimanalo." says Scott Ishikawa of the DOT.
Traffic Monday was already starting to back up about a quarter-mile from the work site. The state will shut down one lane of the highway while work continues.
