AIEA (KHNL) - A fire ripped through a home in Aiea, claiming the life of an elderly man. Monday's fire in Aiea also sent the victim's brother to a nearby hospital.
Takamasa Kajiwara was trying to save his brother, who was still inside their home on Uwao Drive.
"However by that time, the fire got a pretty good hold and the heat was way too intense," said Capt. Kenison Tejada with the Honolulu Fire Dept.
About 30 firefighters battled the flames. It took about half an hour to get the fire under control. But one of the residents, 81-year-old Susumu Kajiwara, didn't make it. He had been living there with his brother for nearly 50 years.
"It was intense," said Jensen Quevido, witness.
People who live nearby did what they could to help.
"I went to the neighbor's house and grabbed her water hose and started shooting the neighbor's house to prevent that house from burning," said Quevido.
Kajiwara was taken to Pali Momi Medical Center where he was treated for minor burns. He will now live with another brother in Waipahu.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
