(KHNL) The sound of crushing metal echoed throughout the University of Hawaii Manoa campus.
Demolition crews began work to tear down a long-standing dorm to make way for a new one.
The University of Hawaii's Frear Hall was closed back in 1997 because of poor physical conditions.
U.H. spokesman Jim Manke says they expect the dorm to be leveled by early next week.
Once that's done, construction will begin to build two new 12 story towers.
The new dorm will house 810 students.
The cost of the project is an estimated 60 million dollars.
The new dorm is expected to be complete by the Fall of 2008.
