(KHNL) - A large, hopeful group gathered inside the Blaisdell Exhibition hall Saturday.

It was a day many had been waiting for. Some 250 Native Hawaiian families were awarded "homestead leases" in Phases 2 and 3 of the Kaupea subdivision, in Kapolei.

The 52-acre master planned community has almost 330 lots.

The first seventy-six homes were awarded last year, in November.

Some recepients are coming home to Hawaii to move in to their new homes, like the Awana family, reutrning from Seattle, Washington.

"We've been waiting a long time. It worked out well, cause we're both finally retired - so we can come back, ya!..."

Applicants had to financially pre-qualify in order to be selected for a homestead lot.

Construction has begun on Phase 1 and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
