Food Vendors Vie for Military Contracts

KO OLINA (KHNL) - A small food fair in Ko Olina could provide a big boost to local businesses. Soda crackers and Snapple drinks are just some of the 800 local products at this expo.

60 vendors are trying to court military buyers into stocking Hawaii's five commissary shelves with their products. Getting a slot can mean overnight success. Vendor Faustino Guzman, co-owner of Bella Rosa, estimates it can boost his profits "maybe 40-50% easily, maybe even more. We are hearing that we can go as far as to the Far East."

The commissaries in Hawaii sell $210 million of goods a year. The military will announce its selections Saturday.
