Champion Surfer Garcia Guilty of Tax Evasion

SAN DIEGO (KHNL) A former world surfing champ from Hawaii pleaded guilty to tax evasion Monday in federal court.

Sunny Garcia pleaded guilty to evading taxes on more than $400,000 in prize winnings. Garcia won the money in professional surfing events from 1996-2001.

He faces a maximum three-year prison sentence and fines of up to $100,000 when he is sentenced in San Diego on August 28th.

Garcia is a former world champ and five-time winner of the triple crown of surfing. He grew up in Waianae.
