KHNL has learned that 37,000 electric customers are without power Thursday afternoon. A series of power outages is affecting Hawaii Kai, Waipahu, Manoa, Makakilo, Ewa and Kunia.
Three generators unexpectedly tripped. Two of the generators belong to HECO and are located at Waiau. The third generator was an independent unit located at Campbell Industrial Park. With four of Oahu's nineteen generators off line for routine maintenance, the loss of three means that a total of seven generators are off line during a peak demand period.
"Because of the unanticipated loss of the three generators, we had to manually shed load in order to stabilize the system" said Jose Dizon of Hawaiian Electric Company.
"Power to homes and businesses was curtailed in order to avoid damage to the total sytem and to avoid a more extensive outage" said Dizon.
