WAIKIKI (KHNL) -- A Kahuku High School graduate who hit the national music scene is using his celebrity status to promote a worthy cause - recycling.
Musician and North Shore native Jack Johnson met some Oahu students this afternoon to congratulate them for winning a recycling contest.
Nearly 30 Hawaii schools participated in the "Cans for Cash" challenge.
Punahou School won after it collected the most cans, more than 90 thousand!
Student Elyse Collat of Punahou says she did it for the earth.
"I think it was exciting but it's not about the recognition. I'm just glad our school got a chance to participate in helping take care of our island."
Johnson adds, "We'd just like to inspire kids to give back when they get older."
Punahou students plan to donate the money to environmental charities. Their prize for winning the contest?
A mini concert at their school by who else?
