(KHNL) - At Kalaeloa, the sounds of racing are now just memories.
Hawaii Raceway Park shut down last month and state lawmakers put the brakes on a tax credit for construction of a new track.
"When it came to a screeching halt, all of us got kind of revved up and angry,"said George Grace III, a race track supporter.
More racing could be in the works. The state senate has inserted $1 million into its version of the budget to help the city government condemn the track.
"We do need a safe controlled environment, and that's here. We need to preserve what we have," said track supporter Evelyn Souza.
Supporters who spent their weekends at the track say they would like to eventually operate it if the state and city can acquire the property.
"Oh i'm sure it will take more than that," Grace said. "I look at like it's a good faith deposit."
For now, the track remains closed.
