HPD Pays Final Tribute to Chief Michael Nakamura

HONOLULU (KHNL)- Hundreds of officers and dozens of people from other law enforcement agencies lined the sidewalks fronting HPD headquarters to pay respects to the chief. The police headquarters at Beretania Street was a sea of blue Wednesday as officers stood at attention on both sides of the street.

At 2 p.m. the motorcade passed through slowly and stopped in front of the police station for a final farewell.

His colleagues say he will be missed. Chaplain Alex Veraga remembers "just his smile and persona. He will always be with us in our halls and hearts."

HPD holds a funeral motorcade on two occassions: when an officer dies on the line of duty or when a chief dies. Nakamura is remembered for improving morale and setting fair standards for promotions and special training.
