Not Me...

People venture into the water though the signs and the experts say “stay out”. People have an extra drink or two before climbing behind the wheel of their car. Tragedies occur; people get hurt, sick, or sometimes die; stuff happens. But why put yourself in a position to become a news story for the wrong reasons on purpose? Why defy the odds and risk your life for a little extra pleasure or joy or sheer arrogance?

Perhaps it’s the “not me” syndrome. Now that’s not a medical term or a clinical definition, but it is the attitude of some people who seem to ignore logic and reality, and ultimately may suffer the grim consequences. For what? For an extra afternoon spent swimming or surfing? For a chance to race home when you’re physically impaired because you delude yourself into believing that everything will be OK and you can do it and no one can tell you what to do?

People make mistakes, but tempting fate and making errors of commission when you should know better is selfish and foolish. “Not me”? Right. Until you become a news story; one that you won’t be around to watch in the 6 o’clock news. Think about it…
