EAST OAHU (KHNL) - A woman is dead and a teenaged boy was in critical condition after a two-car collision in Aina Haina Monday morning. The crash during rush hour snarled East Oahu traffic for hours.
Traffic is flowing again on Kalanianaole Highway near East Hind Drive.
"The traffic was backed up a lot," Eliana Crestani, who was stuck in traffic, said.
The only reminder of the violent collision that happened are the skid marks on the roadway.
"It was shocking. It was really bad," Crestani said. "And, you know, I can't help thinking of this person who said, 'Goodbye, I'll see you tonight.' And then no more."
Police say a woman at the wheel of a Toyota Corolla pulled out of a private driveway, right into the path of a Mazda 626. The Mazda plowed into the driver's side of the woman's car, which was also carrying a teenaged boy.
"The car that got hit was a mess," Crestani said. "The whole side was crashed inside. And the front seat was all turned, and pushed toward the other seat."
The 26-year-old man who was traveling on Kalanianaole Highway suffered minor injuries, and refused treatment at the scene.
But the 40-year-old woman who was broad-sided was later pronounced dead at the Queen's Medical Center. Her teenaged passenger was last reported to be in critical condition.
"Just remind to myself that I have to have eyes always, and never lose, never lose attention," Crestani said.
Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. They're still trying to determine if speed played a role.
