(KHNL) It was a deadly weekend on Hawaii roadways. Four people died in traffic related deaths in the past two days, one of them on Hawaii island, three of them on Oahu.

Perhaps the most dramatic accident took place early Sunday morning. One man died, another was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a freak crash in Kalihi Sunday morning. Police say the Jeep Cherokee was going townbound on the H-1 viaduct when the driver lost control, crashed into the railing, launched in the air, before crashing more than 50 feet below. The vehicle was crushed so badly, firefighters had to pry the roof open to pull a victim out.

"There's no other vehicles involved at this time," said Sgt. Kevin Espinda, of HPD's Traffic Division. "Speed and alcohol both appear to be factors. The passenger had his seat belt on. Unknown if the driver had his seat belt on."

The man police believe was the passenger in the SUV was killed. The man believed to be the driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The ages and names of the victims have not been released yet.

The SUV landed on the bike path near Middle Street, near the H-1 Westbound on-ramp. No one on the ground was hurt. Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation into the crash. They say this is the 27th traffic death on Oahu this year, compared to 25 at the same time last year.

Later Sunday afternoon, at about 2:00 PM, a 26 year old man died after he crashed his motorcycle head-on into a pick up truck. The accident happened on Kaukonahua road, in Waialua. The man died at the scene.

Saturday a 39-year-old woman died after she plowed a stolen van into a tree in Kahuku. Traffic investigators say the woman was speeding and weaving through traffic on Kamehameha Highway. She also died at the scene.
