Food Facts

Just when I thought that we would all have to eat only blueberries, walnuts, and broccoli to ensure a long life, the good news is out- dark chocolate is high in antioxidants.  Now before you go out and ravage the supermarket for a complete week of Twix a la mode or Mars Bars fricassee, keep in mind that this is just our weekly reminder that no one really knows for sure the long term health impact of any of these quirky food saviors.

 

Tofu was supposedly a lifesaver, but don’t eat too much. Load up on fish- oops, watch that mercury content.  Oat bran- that’s the answer…oh, it just makes you full?  I guess wine is great in moderation, just don’t tax your liver enjoying a carafe.

 

Beyond fruits, vegetables, certain nuts, and exercise, it’s important to not get carried away with the reported life elixirs du jour.  This week it’s dark chocolate, which is one step closer to my hope that Twinkies, Ho Hos and Ding Dongs promote a long life.  Well, maybe not, and I make no joke about the obesity issue we have here in  Hawaii, but a smile on your face and sheer enjoyment when you eat is OK once in a while, too.  Think about it...
