Homeless Children Taken Away From Mother

Child Protective Services suspected the homeless children were abused and neglected. Child Protective Services suspected the homeless children were abused and neglected.

ALA MOANA (KHNL) -- Eight children who have been living in Ala Moana Beach Park have been taken away from their mother. The children were taken away after healthcare workers reported that some of them were injured and neglected. The children ranging from one to 11 years old were taken away after healthcare workers from the Waikiki Health Center suspected two of the children were injured and neglected .

"Officers responded we met with a witness here that reported the children here had some colds, skin infections and possibly a dislocated elbow or right shoulder" Sgt. Sam Fontanilla of Honolulu Police Department.

Two boys ages two and six were taken to Kapiolani Medical Center. Although the mother denies abusing her children, police have initiated a child endangerment case.

"I don't want my kids to look like this - CPS and take them" said Yovita Sykab, children's mother.

According to the Sykab, the family lived in Ala Moana Beach Park for three months. She said prior to that, they were living in a one bedroom apartment in Makiki before they got evicted.

"After that, we keep going around, looking for a house. No can find house up until now."

The single Micronesian mother, who moved to Hawaii from Guam last year, said even though she has a job, it's not enough to feed and house her large family.

"I cannot pay rent with food stamp" said Sykab.
