Olympic Ideals

The Olympic Games begin today, and to me they still represent the pinnacle of human athletic endeavor.  The events themselves often culminate an individual's lifetime pursuit of a dream.  The camaraderie, spirit, and will of competitors from all over the globe will be seen by billions of people, perhaps as a microcosm of what it's like when people come together to compete, yet still put aside politics and egos in the spirit of tolerance and acceptance.

Lofty goals, to be sure, but every two years, the Olympics still remind us that at the most basic level, we really aren't all that different, and we can celebrate the universal sameness in mankind as a whole, while at the same time accept the differences that make people and cultures unique on this fragile planet that we all call home.

I know, it sounds a bit simplistic and idealistic, but that's what I like about these Games.  So step back from the "real world" drama and trauma for the next 17 days, and enjoy some curling, hockey, biathlon, skeleton, and luge.  Think about it…
