Showdown Brewing Between Kauai Mayor and Police Chief

(KHNL) A showdown is brewing over the leadership of the Kauai Police Department .Tuesday morning the Kauai Mayor let it be known he wants change.

M ayor Bryan Baptiste has asked the Kauai Police Commission to remove Police Chief K.C. Lum.

Union officials have criticized Lum. They say he lacks the management skills and leadership abilities needed to run the department. But Lum says he has no intentions of leaving. He says, if the Commission tries to fire him he'll request a "contested case hearing."

Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste said, "In my mind , communication and leadership go hand in hand and leadership is only as good as your ability to bring the people under you up to a common good. An d that hasn't happened".

Kauai Police Commission Chair Carol Furtado said, "I cannot speak for the mayor. The mayor has his daily meetings with his department heads and as leader of the county they would need to communicate. I  have not been there and I have not observed them so what I 'm looking for is more specifics to the general comments that there is poor communication."

Tuesday afternoon, Lum released a statement saying, "The Mayor has the prerogative to ask the Police Commission to take action. I hope the Police Commission will look at the situation objectively and make a decision favorable to the future of the Kauai Police Department and the community."

Last year , the Kauai Council authorized an investigation of the Police Department. The council cited low morale and the possibility of lawsuits. The Police Commission is scheduled to meet at the end of next month to discuss the Mayor's concerns at that time .
