(KHNL) A man climbing on a giant boulder was crushed when it rolled on top of him. Hana police say the 25 year old victim who just moved to Hana was killed in a "freak accident."

It happened around 3pm Saturday afternoon on M aui.

Fire officials say the man had just finished hiking and was resting by Lelekea stream when he was crushed by a huge boulder that rolled onto his abdomen. He was pinned beneath it for some time as his friends ran for help and waited for rescuers to arrive.

He died at the scene after rescuers rolled the boulder off him.  His friends told us they were able to comfort him while he was pinned. Officials estimate the boulder to was 4-feet in diameter and at least 25-hundred pounds.

This isn't the first boulder-related tragedy for the area. In September 2004 a national park ranger was also killed. She had stopped to clear a bunch of rocks on the narrow road-way when a 3-foot boulder struck her in the back of the head and killed her.

Park officials also called this a "freak accident."
