Coqui Frog Creating Big Problems for Big Island

Big Island (KHNL) - A small frog is still causing big problems on Hawaii Island.

Residents say the very loud chirp of the frogs is ruining their quality of life. In Hilo today, Mayor Harry Kim and local lawmakers unveiled a new strategy to get rid of the frog.

It includes loaning neighbors chemical sprays and securing five thousand dollar grants to buy more eradication gear.

Kim says, "We got a real good start. Everyone agrees - federal, state, city, county agencies- that this is where we're going to go."

Hawaii Island lawmakers also have a 2006 legislative package that includes two million dollars in funding to work on the problem.
