movie review: A SIMPLE FAVOR

Movie Review: A Simple Favor

A femme fatale and a widow form an unlikely friendship in A SIMPLE FAVOR, a stylish thriller that resembles GONE GIRL but is a lot more enjoyable.

There are plenty of comic touches and a plot full of surprising twists and turns.

The ending may be a bit far fetched, but the movie is so much fun I didn't mind.

Stephanie (voice over): A few weeks ago, I met Emily, this wonderful elegant person. Our sons brought us together, actually.

Emily: Come here little dude.

Emily's son: Can me and  Miles  have a play date today?

Emily: Do you drink? Does your kid drink, maybe? It's never too early to start teaching.

Stephanie: I think you're joking….but great.

Anna Kendrick is spot on as a perky and rather nerdy widowed single mom.

Blake Lively as the femme fatale, Emily, is as devious and arrogant as she is stylish and attractive.

Emily has her husband, Sean, played by Henry Golding of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, wrapped around her finger.

Sean: She's an enigma, my wife.

Emily (to Stephanie): Did you just take my picture?…Erase it.

Stephanie: I guess I'm not the kind of person you're normally friends with.

Emily: Oh you do not wanna be friends with me. Trust me.

Emily likes to toy with Stephanie, but Stephanie is smitten and can't resist.

Emily: What's the wildest thing you've ever done?

Stephanie: I don't know. (mumbles) You go first.

Emily: OK, a few months ago, Sean and I had his T.A. over for dinner, drinks and a threesome.

Stephanie: Was John jealous of him?

Emily: Did I say it was a him?

The story gets moving when Emily asks Stephanie for the "simple favor" of picking up her son after school which Stephanie readily agrees to do.

But days later, Emily still hasn't come home and nobody knows where she is.

Stephanie gets closer to Sean and his son and does what she can to help find her missing friend, but she soon learns that she and Sean are suspects.

Detective: Were you aware that he took out an extra four million dollar life insurance policy on Emily before she disappeared?

You may think you know where this is going, but the surprises are just beginning.
